Swiss Franc Falls Against US Dollar as US PCE Inflation Tops Forecasts
The Swiss Franc (CHF) is weakening against the US Dollar (USD) on Wednesday as stronger-than-expected US inflation data boosts demand for the Greenback. USD/CHF is trading around 0.8052, up roughly 0.47% on the day.
The latest US Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index showed headline inflation rising 3.7% year over year in July, above the 3.6% market forecast. Core PCE, which excludes food and energy, remained at 3.3%, while both headline and core prices increased 0.2% month over month.
The data has strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve could maintain a restrictive policy stance or potentially raise interest rates later in the year. Market pricing for a 25-basis-point September Fed hike increased following the report, helping the US Dollar recover against major currencies, including the Swiss Franc.
USD/CHF Outlook
The 0.8050 area is now an important near-term level for USD/CHF. Holding above this zone could allow the pair to extend its recovery, while a move back below it could signal renewed demand for the Swiss Franc.
The Franc also remains influenced by its traditional safe-haven status and developments surrounding the Middle East, particularly the Strait of Hormuz. Changes in oil prices and geopolitical risk could create additional volatility in the currency pair.
Market Outlook
Attention now shifts toward Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's upcoming speech at the Jackson Hole symposium. Any hawkish comments could provide additional support for the US Dollar, while a dovish tone could weaken the Greenback and allow CHF to recover.
For now, US inflation, Fed rate expectations and geopolitical developments remain the key drivers for USD/CHF.
