Natural Gas Price Breaks 50-Day EMA After $3 Rejection
Natural gas prices are under renewed pressure after failing to break above the $3.00 psychological level. The October natural gas contract has slipped below its 50-day exponential moving average (EMA), weakening the short-term technical outlook.
Natural gas was recently trading around $2.88, with sellers gaining control after the rejection near $3.00. The failure to sustain the earlier bullish momentum suggests traders are becoming more cautious as the market transitions toward the October contract and the seasonal shift into the autumn period.
$3.00 Rejection Weighs on Natural Gas
The $3.00 level remains a major psychological and technical barrier. Natural gas previously approached this area after breaking above a descending trendline and moving through the $2.87–$2.90 resistance zone.
However, the inability to hold above the $3.00 mark has encouraged profit-taking and pushed prices back below the 50-day EMA. A sustained move below the moving average could increase the probability of further downside.
$2.65 Support in Focus
The $2.65 area is emerging as an important potential support zone if the decline continues. A move toward this level would represent a deeper retracement from the recent highs and could determine whether buyers are willing to re-enter the market.
If $2.65 holds, natural gas could attempt another recovery toward $2.90 and $3.00. Conversely, a decisive break below $2.65 would weaken the technical structure further and could expose the market to additional downside.
Seasonal Outlook Changes
The transition toward the October contract is also becoming increasingly important. Natural gas demand typically changes as summer cooling demand fades and the market begins preparing for the autumn and winter heating season.
Recent US storage data showed a smaller-than-average weekly injection, while hot weather and strong LNG feedgas demand have provided some support to prices. However, inventories remain above the five-year average, limiting the upside potential.
Natural Gas Market Outlook
The short-term technical picture has weakened following the rejection at $3.00 and the break below the 50-day EMA.
Traders should watch $2.65 support and the $2.90–$3.00 resistance zone for confirmation of the next major move. A recovery above $3.00 would restore the bullish setup, while a break below $2.65 could signal a deeper correction.
For now, natural gas remains caught between seasonal demand changes, storage levels, weather forecasts and LNG export demand, keeping volatility elevated.
