The Japanese Yen (JPY) is weakening against the US Dollar (USD) on Friday, with USD/JPY trading around 159.60, extending its advance for a fifth consecutive session. The pair remains close to the psychologically important 160.00 level as markets await Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech at the Jackson Hole symposium.
Hotter Japanese Inflation
Fresh inflation data from Tokyo provided some support for the Yen earlier in the session. Tokyo headline CPI increased to 1.9% year over year in August, while core inflation accelerated to 1.8%, exceeding the 1.7% market expectation. Inflation excluding food and energy also reached 2.0%, highlighting continued price pressures in Japan.
The stronger inflation figures have reinforced expectations that the Bank of Japan (BoJ) could raise interest rates at its September policy meeting. Market expectations for further BoJ tightening have increased following recent comments from policymakers.
However, those expectations have so far failed to generate a sustained Yen recovery, with USD/JPY remaining near 159.60.
Jackson Hole Takes Center Stage
The main focus for currency markets has shifted to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech. Investors are looking for clues about the Federal Reserve’s approach to persistent inflation and the future path of US interest rates.
Recent US inflation data showed headline PCE inflation at 3.7% year over year in July, above expectations. The data has supported expectations for at least one Fed rate increase this year and helped the US Dollar maintain its recent strength.
A hawkish message from Warsh could strengthen the Dollar and push USD/JPY toward 160.00, while a dovish tone could revive Yen demand and pull the pair lower.
USD/JPY Technical Outlook
The 159.60–160.00 zone is the key area for USD/JPY in the near term. A sustained break above 160.00 could strengthen the bullish momentum and expose higher levels.
On the downside, a move below 159.00 could signal that Yen buyers are regaining control, with the recent lows around 158.00–158.50 becoming potential areas of interest.
The pair also remains sensitive to intervention risks. Japan has already undertaken significant foreign-exchange intervention to support the Yen, meaning a renewed move toward multi-decade lows could increase market sensitivity to official comments and policy action.
Market Outlook
USD/JPY remains caught between two opposing forces: strong US Dollar demand and elevated US rate expectations versus hotter Japanese inflation and rising expectations for further BoJ tightening.
For now, traders are watching 160.00 resistance and 159.00 support, with Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech likely to determine the next major directional move.
