Euro: Warsh Speech Weighs on EUR Against US Dollar – Danske Bank

By ·

The Euro (EUR) has come under pressure against the US Dollar (USD) after Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh delivered a hawkish message at the Jackson Hole symposium. The comments triggered a reassessment of US interest-rate expectations and pushed EUR/USD lower.

Danske Bank's Research Team notes that markets are now treating the outlook for a September Federal Reserve rate move as roughly a coin flip, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the next policy decision.

Hawkish Warsh Supports the Dollar

Warsh emphasized the Federal Reserve's focus on price stability and the need for confidence that underlying inflation is moving sustainably toward the central bank's 2% objective.

The remarks were interpreted as hawkish by financial markets, reducing confidence in an imminent easing cycle and supporting the US Dollar.

Higher US rate expectations can also lift Treasury yields, increasing the relative attractiveness of Dollar-denominated assets and putting pressure on EUR/USD.

September Fed Decision in Focus

Market expectations for the September meeting have shifted significantly. Instead of assuming that a rate cut is the most likely outcome, traders are now assigning a much more balanced probability to different policy scenarios.

This uncertainty could keep the US Dollar sensitive to incoming economic data over the coming weeks.

The next major indicators, particularly US employment and inflation figures, will be closely watched for confirmation of the Federal Reserve's policy direction.

EUR/USD Technical Picture

The decline in EUR/USD has brought important technical levels back into focus.

The 1.1600 area is an important near-term support zone. A sustained break below this level could increase bearish pressure and expose the pair to 1.1550.

On the upside, a recovery above 1.1650 could help stabilize the pair, while a move through 1.1700 would improve the short-term bullish outlook.

Euro Faces a Policy-Rate Challenge

The EUR/USD outlook will depend not only on the Federal Reserve but also on expectations for European Central Bank policy.

If US rate expectations remain elevated while ECB policy expectations stay relatively accommodative, the interest-rate differential could continue to favor the Dollar.

However, stronger Eurozone economic data or a more hawkish ECB stance could provide support for the Euro and limit further downside.

What Traders Should Watch

Key catalysts for EUR/USD include:

- September Federal Reserve rate expectations

- US Nonfarm Payrolls and employment data

- US inflation and PCE figures

- Treasury yields

- ECB monetary-policy expectations

- Eurozone economic data

- US Dollar Index momentum

EUR/USD Outlook

Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole message has shifted the short-term balance in favor of the US Dollar. With September policy expectations now close to a 50/50 scenario, upcoming US economic data could determine whether the Dollar's recent strength continues.

For now, 1.1600 support and 1.1650–1.1700 resistance are the key technical areas to monitor as traders await clearer signals from the Federal Reserve.
